Rubio was a qualified mechanical engineer from the New York Institute of Technology who once leaving the sport, set up his own Nissan dealership in Saint James, New York, which he ran until 2012. Since then, he has been a motorsport consultant before becoming a crew chief and programme manager. He worked with Aston Martin in the Pirelli World Challenge, the Continental Tire Series and the North American GT4 series, before moving to de la Torre motorsports. Gary is currently a crew chief for Cameron Racing amongst other roles.
