Initially Didier became a driver manager, but he is now retired from driving and running a corporate event company near Bourg-en-Bresse, mostly based around various of motor racing, but more recently, as the business grows, he has branched out into other areas. Cottaz won the 1993 French Formula 3 championship and finished as runner-up of the 1991 French Formula Renault series. He was also very adept in sportscars, which he took up in 1996 after his single-seater career stalled, winning two races with Jerome Policand in 1997.
