Top sprint car racer, particularly in California, killed in a race at Ascot Park when Don Branson's car rebounded into his path after a crash. Ritchy Atkins was the 1964 and 1965 BCRA Midget Champion, but also took the 1966 BCRA Indoor Midget title. He also won the famous Turkey Night race, also in 1965. As well as sprint and midget cars, Dick had also taken a USAC win, again on a dirt oval, just before his death. Atkins started racing in the late 1950's and became a particular specialist on dirt tracks, with a smooth but fast style.
