Son Billy went on to race in sprint and dirt cars for may years, so Bill supported his career. Puterbaugh was also an active member of the Indy 500 Oldtimers Club and kept close ties with a number of his old racing friends. Bill raced on in USAC events for some while. Bill was the 1975 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year who took multiple wins in sprint car racing. Bill died after a short illness in an Indianapolis hospice. Before his death Bill was involved in after-dinner speaking events and historic meetings.
