Died recently. Until relatively recently, he had been racing in dry lakebed and speed trials. A very versatile racer, he even competed in drag racing! Billy was the son of Billy Scott Sr., who ran a muffler shop and was a noted hot rod and drag racer in California. Scott was just seventeen when he began racing hot rods at the highest level, but he was just five when he started racing quarter-midgets. In 1969, he had a short spell in the army but was invalidated due to a back injury sustained in a hot rod crash and instead moved into stock cars. One year before his Indy 500 debut, he was there in a different role as Rick Muther's race mechanic. In the 1990's, Scott moved to Hawaii and drove his roadster in land speed record attempts, but faded away from the sport after his father, who remained involved in the sport, died. After being invited back to a reunion event, Billy got interested in the sport and then built a hybrid blown-fuel lakester roadster car.
