Mahler spent over 40 years in concrete construction - he still worked, until quite recently, as a civil engineer, cement finisher and contractor for Classic Concrete Designs, based in Overland Park, Kansas. They specialised in concrete repair as well as masonry and constructing countertops. Mahler died of cancer in 2024. Mahler raced for some time in USAC events, but never quite achieved the success that his initial promise showed. John also served for a short time in the US Navy and also spent a while downhill skiing.
