Still alive and a regular visitor to historic events. Still lives in Michigan, running a cattle farm. Fairchild started his career in 1952, racing coupes in short track racing before progressing to supermodified cars. Fairchild hadn't planned on racing; he left with his schoolboy friend to travel America, but they ran out of money by the time they reached Oklahoma, so both lads took up a role at a junkyard, where Cy spotted an old car and decided to race it to try and earn some extra cash. Fairchild also competed in stock cars, but it was in sprint and midget cars that he was at his best. Arguably his best win was in 1967, winning the Little 500 sprint car race, but he did also win two USAC Sprint Car Series events. Fairchild then later worked as a promoter for Tri-City Speedway in the 1980's alongside his duties at his cattle farm.
