US Indy Pro Champion, who, unusually, came to Europe to race, rather than stay in a top drive in the US. This did not work out however and Townsend went to the IRL, but after irregular drives, including the Indy 500, then went into endurance racing, but this too became irregular. After a period of doing some commentating for Speedvision, and a brief return to the Indycar Series, he was a full-time racer in the US Sportscar Series, although he still returned to the Indy 500 until 2016. In 2023, his other commitments have taken him away from racing; son Jaxon is rapidly rising up the US feeder series whilst Townsend is also an ambassador for Lexus and a television analyst for racing coverage.
