Erwin's mother died whilst he was attempting to qualify for the Indy 500, so he never had a proper crack at the event. For a while, he continued racing, in sprint cars in his home state but his roles as a real estate agent, and subsequently, business owner - he owns a local real estate branch in Denton, Texas, have meant an end to racing. Erwin now lives in Corinth, north of Dallas.
