Now retired, and runs the family SITRA transportation business founded by his grandfather. However, he remained in the sport for a while as he was the two-seater Formula 1 driver and was still at events up until COVID. His post-Formula 3000 career wasn't bad, with a decent spell in both sportscars and the Porsche Supercup. Saelens was very strong in Formula 3, winning the French Formula 3 title in 1998 and later that year won the Marlboro Masters at Zandvoort, but Formula 3000 didn't see the same success. Unusually for a young driver coming up the ranks, Saelens drove in touring cars before moving into single-seaters.
