Raced in Champ Cars after losing his Formula 1 drive but went back to Japan, initially racing in GT's and Touring Cars. Had a spell out of the sport, but came back and raced in sportscars in Europe and Japan. In 2011, he was in the Le Mans Series, and in 2012, moved into the World Endurance Championship, and was still there in 2014. After another brief barren spell without a drive, Shinji has been racing in the Asian Le Mans Series and in 2017, moved to the Super Taikyu Series, where he remained in 2018. In 2019, he more or less retired from racing to concentrate on his role as team manager of the Mugen Super GT team. In more recent years, he is focusing on broadcasting work instead although he also appears in Super Taikyu. Shinji is the son of Tsuneharu Nakano who raced in Japanese Formula 3 in the 1970's and 1980's.
