Was test driver for Renault F1, before making a surprise return in 2010 with HRT, and was also test driver for Virgin. Barring an appearance at the last Formula E event of the 2014-2015 season in London, he hasn't raced since Formula 1 but that is largely because in 2012, he became head of a medical and social welfare corporation whilst studying for qualifications in the field. His aim is to improve medical care and social welfare to the Japanese public, especially the elderly. Alongside his management role (He is currently President of the Indian Welfare Village Association as well as other businesses), he lectures and does school support work to that aim. That all took a step forward in 2021, when he became a politician, being elected to the Japanese House of Representatives for the Liberal Democrat party. He still works in racing in terms of broadcasting, in print, web and television media. Sakon speaks three languages; Japanese, Spanish and English.
