A mechanical engineer, Ludwig started with Daimler Benz as an engineer and designer for ship and aeroplane engines. Then fought in WW2 as a Luftwaffe pilot, but was shot down. Survived this, but his injuries put him out of the war. He then returned to Daimler and then in 1951, he became head of racing car development. In 1954 he was named senior engineer of the company and then became one of Audi's most influential and important designers, developers and engineers. Retired a few days after his 62nd birthday in 1973 and remained a director at Audi until 1985. Even now he is remembered with great affection there.
