An early legend, Christian retired in the 1920's to spend time with his family. He then worked for Dailmer-Benz until retirement. Lautenschlager worked as a locksmith before moving to Switzerland. Soon after that move, he then found employment in a cycle factory before joining Daimler as a mechanic in 1899. There then started 55 years of association with Mercedes until he died peacefully in his sleep. Lautenschlager started racing in 1908 and he won the French Grand Prix on his debut! He then won the event again in 1914, at the time when it was THE key event in the European racing calendar. Christian raced infrequently thereafter, occasionally appearing in road racing.
