A Mercedes employee for his whole working life, he joined Daimler in 1902 as an engineer, joining its racing department. He later became a racing driver for the team and raced for around 15 years, retiring in 1924, with a class win at the Targa Florio in 1921 a particular highlight. He then became head of the competitions deparment, overseeing Mercedes' return to Grand Prix racing. He then handed over to Alfred Neubauer, before retiring in 1942. He then remained a director with the company until his death. Nephew Karl also briefly raced.
