Killed in practice for the Astor Cup, but died a hero; his car caught fire inexplicably on the straight and rather than try and escape there and then, steered the car away from crowds, but died from the burns received. Vanderbilt Cup winner in 1909 and 1910, he was also long-time test driver for the ALCO (American Locomotive Company) car company. He also worked for ALCO's Boston division, C.F.Whitney as a car salesman, which in turn allowed him to race for Whitney and he moved on from there. Grant initially stopped racing after ALCO left the sport in 1911, staying with the company as a test driver but in 1913 he moved back into racing, continuing until his death.
