A car salesman, he was a Captain in World War One, and later moved to Colorado after a spell in Michigan. Orr was a regular racer during 1914 and 1915 in AAA events, with his best finish being third in a board oval race at Omaha, but he also did well in a dirt oval race just before that in Sioux City. All of these races, including his Indianapolis 500 attempt were in a Maxwell which Orr helped develop and test.
