Veteran midget ace, killed in a Indianapolis 500 practice, one day after his rookie test. Cortner had been racing midgets pretty much since World War Two. His crash occurred when the speedway had higher winds than normal, around 25 miles per hour. The car lost control and crashed into the outside wall at turn 3 before spinning. Cortner wasn't wearing a shoulder harness and because of that, his face hit the steering wheel with incredible force, causing him fatal head injuries.
