Still involved in the Mini club racing scene, where he's held in the highest regard - he used to drive, until a huge crash in 2006 meant retirement. Sadly, the crash also cost him the sight in one eye, but he is making a recovery, and has used the time to write a book about his life, whilst trying to continue to make appearances at historic festivals (including the Goodwood Revival in 2008). John also liked to restore classic cars. Although Rhodes was excellent in Mini's, he was also strong in Formula Junior and Formula Libre. Rhodes' grandfather was an early motorist and his parents raced in trials. John then became an apprentice mechanic, learning how to build cars before embarking on his own career in which he was excellent in touring cars but raced in sportscars, single-seaters and rallycross. He also ran his own garage for a while.
