Sadly died in 2008. A proud Rhodesian, he moved to South Africa, where he lived for some years. He still kept links with the sport, appearing at many a historic event in Southern Africa and a few in England, where he was born and lived for a while before the family moved to Rhodesia; his father was a cloth merchant who moved abroad for new opportunities. Sadly suffered tragedy in 2007, when his grandson was killed in the war in Afghanistan, but another grandson raced, keeping the Tingle name going, not least as his name was also Sam Tingle. Sam started racing in 1947 and proved quite adept in sportscars. He took a number of wins in South African Formula 1 racing, probably being at his peak in 1966. Sam stopped full-time racing in 1970 before developing the Donnybrook circuit near Harare. He was five time Rhodesian Champion between 1959 and 1964, having started in hillclimb events in a MG. He also bought and raced Dick Gibson's Connaught A.
