Switched to the CART Series in 2003, after a spell in Euro Formula 3000, but it didn't work out. Ever since then, Camathias has been mostly in sportscars and GT racing. He raced for a while in the GTOC series (winning the title in 2007), then in 2015, raced in the Italian GT series. In 2016, he was racing in the World Endurance Championship, but switched to the European Le Mans Series in 2017. In 2021, he was back full-time again, racing in the GT4 European Series but that was his last full-time racing season. Joel is the son of former Formula 2 driver Romeo, whilst Joel's great-uncle was Florian Camathias, who raced for years in sidecars and took many wins in the World Sidecar Championship, before being killed in a race crash in 1965. In 2023, Camathias retired from racing, to run the family insurance consultancy and real estate business; something he had taken up more anyway, especially after the death of Romeo in 2017. To keep fit though, he plays padel, a form of tennis.
