A real estate salesman and businessman, Frey decided to try his luck in racing in the early 1980's and raced in Formula Ford, Formula 3 and sportscars before making it to F3000. In two seasons running in his own team, he failed to qualify, before moving his team to sportscars. He then moved to raced in American single-seaters before having a number of legal issues which eventually resulted in him being prosecuted for selling apartments that were not his to sell and selling properties that were his to two different people. Since then, Jean-Pierre has started again - he worked for a commerce company in London, but now lives in Agno, where he is involved in a number of businesses.
