5 (1916-1924)

Winner of the Indianapolis 500 in 1924, he died shortly afterwards after injuries sustained in a crash at Altoona. Boyer was the heir to a multi-million pound business as his father ran the company that marketed the Burroughs Adding Machine. This meant a move from Missouri to Detroit, but Joe was also based in Chicago. But instead of the family business, cars became his passion, whether on the road or in races. After serving his country during World War One, his career really took off with two wins - one as a relief for Gaston Chevrolet at Uniontown, and one for himself at Cincinnati.
