Road racer and hillclimber who got in the sport acting as a racing mechanic, relief driver and car tester for the National Motor Company. He had a dramatic start to his career by winning the 1911 Elgin Trophy and then benefitted from National's rather controversial -albeit understandable given the fatality rate of the era - policy that their drivers had to be single, winning the 1912 Indianapolis 500 (although relief drivers were not given credit) by relieving Joe Dawson for 36 laps. Herr stopped racing a few years later and ran the Wilcox and Herr Auto Livery and Taxi company in Indianapolis with friend and racing colleague Howdy Wilcox.
