Local boy in Jackson (although he was actually born in the small village of Deckerville, Michigan, some 175 miles away from Jackson) who was a car tester in his spare time - his work coming as a grocery clerk. He was also a fully qualified mechanical engineer and inventor. After racing, he worked as a steward in a country lodge. He served in World War One, in the French Mortar Battery, 85th Division. In the 1911 Indianapolis 500, Delany drove a Cutting car, starting 24th and finishing 23rd.
