Surprise winner of the 1927 event, his debut at the '500. Retired after a serious arm injury at a race in Detroit, but used his racing winnings for his two businesses - a racing shop and a tavern. He also worked for Charles Shambaugh. Although born in Indiana, his father's early death meant a change of life early on and he moved to Texas to seek out work, becoming a mechanic. He then migrated to racing, initially starting his career on dirt tracks. Souders also worked as a car builder for a short while and was one of the relatively few Americans to race abroad and raced in the Italian Grand Prix in 1927.
