1938 Indianapolis 500 winner, who was killed defending his title one year on. Roberts was a pleasant, upbeat fellow who before racing intitially worked on the family farm. Roberts was also a committed Christian who also took time to fufil his duties as a Sunday School teacher. After his farm days, he moved to California and worked for Lockheed, where he fitted parts onto the ariplanes. Floyd then took up racing and after a slow start gradually saw results come his way. In 1938, as well as winning the '500, he won the National Championship.
