A tester for Columbia, firstly as a biker, then in cars. He worked there from 1903, and started testing from 1906. However his career was damaged by a court case over his driving, in summer 1910. He was cleared, but cut back his racing and testing activities and quit shortly after the 1911 Indianapolis 500 and later moved back from Hartford, Connecticut to New York, where he lived the rest of his life. However Coffey and his family had many links to Hartford and he and his siblings are buried there.
