Killed shortly after his Indianapolis 500 attempt, in a midget car race, when hit by a car avoiding Shorty Templeman's fatal accident. Hemmings was particularly good in midget cars, taking a few wins. Hemmings is one of three drivers buried in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon, Indiana; the other two being Pat O'Connor and Wilbur Shaw. The three of them are buried in a V formation indicating Victory. Hemmings started racing very young, taking up the sport when he was just seventeen, in 1951, and took a few wins in that first season.
