Also known as Pop Green, Carl ran the Green Engineering Company for aeons. His Indianapolis attempt, just shy of his fiftieth birthday seems to have been more of a practice shakedown than a serious qualification attempt. Green trained to become a mechanic and in particular, specialised in making engine parts including lightweight pistons and connecting rods. Carl later worked on engine manufacturing and then subsequently manufactured and sold Ford racing equipment. Carl also wrote a column for National Auto Racing News as technical editor. The R stands for Richard.
