Alfonso's career was setback by a huge crash at Spa in 1987, which he never appeared to recover fully from. Continued to race on for years, but not too successfully or regularly. Went on to work on many business interests, including a publicity firm. His tragic death came when he was hit by a truck, after apparently getting out of the car in the lay-by, to check a possible fault with the car. His death, however, may have been suicide as he suffered many personal blows; Alfonso struggled with his injuries from the 1987 crash, but he also lost a girlfriend in a skiing accident and his fiancee died in a car crash just a month before he passed away. In addition, his advertising agency went bankrupt in 1994 and Alfonso's brother committed suicide in 1993.
