Giedo van der Garde

25 Apr 1985 |
Nationality: |
Netherlands |
Grands Prix: | 19 (2013) |
After losing his Caterham drive, Giedo became test driver at Sauber, with the view to a permanent drive. He also competed in historic racing whilst he progressed to what he thought was an agreed move upwards into a race seat. However, despite being legally entitled to a drive, two other racers were given the seats and this saw Van der Garde and Sauber in a somewhat farcical and acrimonous dispute at the start of the 2015 season which at one point threatened jail for the Sauber team boss Kaltenborn. The full resolution to the dispute was eventually reached, with Giedo settling for his payment back, but no race drive. The legal delays this caused meant Giedo didn't really race in 2015, but ran a kart team to keep him busy. In 2016, Giedo raced in the European Le Mans Series - winning the title - with one-off forays at Le Mans and the WEC. From 2017 onwards, he has been focusing on other projects; TV, racing management, racing driver coaching and other business projects, including real estate, which he continues, but he did also race in sportscars for a few years. In 2023, he retired from full-time racing.
