Dirt track racer, who was successful in the Pennsylvania area, but struggled to make a mark on the national arena, where he was normally a midfield runner at best. He attempted dirt track records for the Langhorne and Pottstown Speedways, both of which speedways are no longer in use. Kalen, as well as his Indianapolis 500 effort entered his own modified Duesenberg into two other AAA events in 1932; dirt oval races at Detroit and Syracuse but didn't qualify for either.
