A truly courageous man, Bob was paralysed after a crash whilst qualifying for the 1968 Indy 500. Hurt died in his sleep whilst fighting prostate cancer. He had gone to Toronto for care as he refused to allow his paralysis to beat him and was an inspiration for Sam Schmidt, in particular. Before racing, Bob was a high jumper and basketball player who then started racing in stock cars. Hurt also tried to overcome his paralysis by trying experimental options in Russia and Sweden as well as Canada and the United States.
