Son and grandson of his famous family namesakes, Billy was the first third-generation Indianapolis 500 driver. Died after a sprint-car crash at Mesa Marin raceway, when he crashed into the wall, suffering grevious head injuries from which he never recovered. The race he died in was restarted and it was the first ever senior win for Jeff Gordon, who would then become a NASCAR legend. Billy was 1988 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year after finishing fourteenth, whilst he also won numerous super modified races.
