Now retired from racing. John obtained a law degree whilst racing and whilst he initially planned to become a full-time attorney, John turned to photography and became an automotive photographer, which he still does today. He works with Mecum Auto Auctions and takes photographs of the rare or grandiose cars the company sell. He lives in Dallas and is a qualified pilot. John's father of the same name raced Indycars in the 1960's but never made it to Indianapolis qualifying. John didn't follow the family sport initially; he instead chose to play tennis and was a winner at US college level, before moving into motocross. He then competed in karts and SCCA events before finally progressing through the ranks to compete at Indianapolis in 1999. When John's sponsor had to withdraw funding, Hollansworth Jr. retired.
