Killed in the 1929 Indianapolis 500, when his car touched the inside wall at turn two, sending his car into a number of flips. A former riding mechanic, he was a regular racer in California, and won the 1928 Pacific Coast Dirt Track series. Spence had enjoyed a particularly strong 1928 season in AAA events too; he had finished fourth at the dirt oval in Detroit and then repeated that result at the board oval at Rockingham. He made his debut at Indianapolis in 1928 as a relief driver for Billy Arnold, eventually competing for eighty-seven laps.
