Primarily a stock car driver, Luther was originally given his chance when he went well in tests. Johnson was of Swedish ancestry, with both his father, Axel, and his mother, Bertha, being born and raised there. Luther worked as a mechanic for Studebaker and it was whilst doing this role that he performed the speed tests which subsequently earned him promotion to racing, which he did for a number of years, linked either to Studebaker or Romthe. After his racing career finished, Johnson became a truck driver.
