Real name was actually Albert Krulock, although the family's old name WAS Krulac, before it was Americanized. Al fought in World War 2 and was actually missing, presumed dead, at one stage after a bombing raid over Germany. No relation to the other Al Miller, despite both coming from the same area in Michigan. Although always associated with Detroit, Al was actually born in Pennsylvania and the family moved to Michigan when he was a toddler. Miller was a blacksmith initially before becoming a racing driver.
