Killed in practice for a dirt track race in Legion Ascot Speedway whilst still very much at his racing peak. Born in Switzerland, Herman moved to the US as a seven-year-old boy but that didn't stop the publicists labelling him as a sensation from Germany! A varied racer, he was excellent on dirt and board tracks and had a very successful season in 1929, taking numerous wins. Schurch was one of the few - if only - drivers married at a speedway, getting married just before a race at the Langhorne Speedway on the 18th October 1930.
