Killed in practice for the Indianapolis 500 when he crashed his car on the South-West turn 2. His car caught fire and it also killed his riding mechanic. Italian-born, with the given name Giuseppe, Joe moved to the US and Pennsylvania as a boy, remaining in Bryn Mawr for most of his life. A former racing mechanic, his brother Tony also raced. The previous year, Caccia had made his debut in a modified Duesenberg road car at Indianapolis, but his race ended early after an accident.
