Influential in Mexican motorsport, Garza is now a broadcaster on national TV and also has real-estate interests and partakes a number of hobbies, including flying, sailing and scuba-diving. Garza progressed very quickly at a young age and was seventeen when he raced in Formula Ford and the IMSA GT series in 1979. His age was no barrier as he finished runner-up in the 1980 Super Vee championship before making his Indy 500 debut, where he astonished people by leading 13 laps before the car suffered suspension failure. Unfortunately Josele couldn't sustain that level of performance consistently thereafter. Garza came very close to Formula 1 in 1988, testing for both Brabham and Minardi, but when he failed to get the hoped for drive, he retired, aged just twenty-five.
