United States |
Indy 500s: | 19 (1983-2007) |
An accident in 2004 looked to have ended his career but he returned to the Indy 500 in 2006! Had success in CART and then switched to the IRL in 2000 and was still racing at the time of his accident. Now, seemingly fully recovered, he also raced in the A1 GP series and was back at Indy again in 2007, despite well publicised personal problems. He no longer races. His son, Al III, also raced to add to the family tradition. Also involved in property development and works as a driver coach and consultant to the Indycar series and to Harding Racing. In 2019, Al narrowly avoided jail after he was found to be driving under the influence of drink for the third time in twelve years. Admitting he was an alcoholic, Unser remains committed to sorting his life out again and still remains involved with Roger Penske and is still on hand to drive racing cars, with two Indianapolis 500 wins to his credit being a massive sway for testing feeback.
