NASCAR legend, who left Indianapolis 500 practice to take a NASCAR ride. Initially stopped racing after a crash and moved into TV but returned to racing with tragic results when he was killed in practice in the Daytona 500. He won eighteen times in an eighteen-year career in NASCAR, which included winning the Coca Cola 500 twice in succession in 1982 and 1983 and also won twice at Daytona in the Bud Shootout race. He also won the Talladega 500 in 1980. He followed the Allison brothers into NASCAR in 1973. In 1997, he was posthumously inducted into the National Motor Sport Press Association's Hall of Fame.
