Killed instantly when he crashed into the wall during his second warm-up lap for the Indianapolis 500 qualifying session. A sportscar ace, he also won an Aurora Formula 1 race at Silverstone. Smiley was a journalist initially, having gained a degree from university, before taking up racing in bikes. He switched to drag racing before moving into sportscars, where he won numerous titles in SCCA events. Smiley quit journalism in 1974 to become a full-time racer, varying his time between Britain and America. Amongst the series he competed in were Formula Ford, Formula 5000, Can-Am and Trans-Am.
