Australia |
Indy 500s: | 6 (2014-2020) |
Son of former Formula 5000 racer Jon, grandson of Lex, and step-grandson of Tony Gaze, who was a big influence on James, and who sadly died just before James made his Indycar debut. Longtime US based, Davison's focus had always been single-seaters, but in 2014, he moved into the new US Sportscar Series for his main drive. Single-seaters hasn't been given up yet, especially as he appeared at the 2014 - and 2015 - Indianapolis 500, and appeared at 2017 as a replacement for the injured Bourdais, but James then continued away from the discipline; in 2017, he was mainly racing in the Pirelli World Challenge series. In 2018, he returned to the Indianapolis 500, which he repeated in 2019. Davison has also become a regular historic racer, being a fan of old racing cars and he won the historic support race at the British Grand Prix in 2019. In 2020, he raced in a very wide ranging set of events, including sportscars and midget and sprint cars in the US, but also made his NASCAR debut that year as well as fitting a return to Indianapolis. In 2021, he again ran a varied schedule, including a part-time NASCAR drive. In 2022, he appeared in Australian S5000.
