Killed in a USAC midget crash, after an eleven car pile-up meant Congdon left the road and crashed into a guardrail. Roadster ace, who was also competent in midgets and sprints, Gary started racing as a teenager in 1956. He was a regular sprint car driver and raced on the West Coast for a while after basing himself in California. Congdon also was a midget-car owner and often raced his own cars, but he occasionally ran them for other drivers, including friend Pat Buening.
