A good driver in the early days of racing, Louis later became a hugely successful and innovative design engineer. He developed the 1st 6-cylinder engine and was an integral name in the development of the supercharger, turbocharger and pressure oil pumps, amongst others. He was also head of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's Technical Committee until 1945. Schwitzer gave a lot of his fortune away and as such, both a women's dormitory at Butler University and the Student Centre at University of Indianapolis bear his name. However the award that has become the most famous in his name is the Louis H Schiwitzer award for Design Innovation.
