Full name John Franklin. Worked as an inventor - he invented a coding system for cars - and electric motor specialist. He also worked for an aircraft company in Philadelphia and a manufacturing business in Cleveland, Ohio, and served, in some form, in both World Wars. However, whilst he survived both campaigns, his son, of the same name, was killed when his plane crashed in Hong Kong fighting the Japanese in 1945. Gelnaw's greatest racing achievement was winning the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup at the Long Island Parkway.
