Killed in a reliability run, becoming the first Indy 500 driver to die. A varied and experienced racer who worked for Case Automobiles and was 1908 National Champion. Strang was the nephew of J. Walter Christie, one of America's pioneers with racing cars, and his uncle helped him tremendously with his career, using Lewis as a mechanic with races in France, but in 1907, Strang took a car Christie built without permission and the two never spoke again. 1908 was Strang's best year but a rather messy short-lived marriage and a couple of injuries meant Strang never really ended up realising his full potential.
